Gor Mahia face toughest test yet in quest for regional football title - Daily Nation

Gor Mahia’s quest to win the first Confederation of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) title in more than four decades faces the toughest test on Tuesday afternoon when they play Sudanese giants Al Hilal in the first semi-final in Kigali.

The potentially-explosive match that will be played at Kigali Pele Stadium will start at 4pm (Kenyan time), and will be followed by the second semi-final fixture at the same venue pitting South Sudan’s Jamus Sports Club and Rwandese Rayon Sports Football Club from 8pm.

Out of the 12 teams that graced this year’s tournament, Al Hilal stood out as the favourites thanks to their impressive achievements.

Besides being Sudan’s most successful football club, Al Hilal are regular participants in the CAF Champions League, and have reached the quarter-finals in the last two editions. The club has also reached the group stage of every edition of the competition, from the 2018/2019 season through to 2023/24.

The last meeting between Gor and Al Hilal came in July 2024 in the Cecafa Club Cup, and the Sudanese giants won 2-0.

Gor Mahia finished top of Group ‘A’ in this year’s tournament on six points and qualified to play Al Hilal in the semi-finals of this year’s tournament.

For their part, Al Hilal qualified for the semi-finals as best runners up from the group stage. Al Hilal finished second in pool 'C' with six points behind leaders Rayon Sports.

Only the top team from each of the three groups in the tournament qualified for the semis along with the best-ranked runners-up.

Gor’s previous triumphs in the Cecafa Club Cup came in 1980, 1981 and 1985. But K’Ogalo have struggled to impress in recent years, and have not been regular participants in the annual tournament.

Gor’s best performance in the tournament in recent years came in 2015 when they lost 2-0 in the final to Tanzania’s Azam FC when it was held in Dar es Salaam.

On their way to this year’s semi-finals, the 22-time Kenyan champions walloped Rwandese Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR FC) 5-0 before losing 1-0 to Ugandan champions Vipers Sports Club.

Gor bounced back in their last pool match, defeating Djibouti’s Garde Republicaine FC 1-0. In the crucial clash against Al Hilal, Gor will miss the services of three key players who picked injuries in the tournament.

They are winger Samuel Kapen, forward Patrick Essombe and team captain Silvester Owino.

Kapen will be sidelined for at least six months after he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament complete tear in Gor’s match against Garde Republicaine.

Essombe, who scored a stunning goal against APR and provided an assist in the clash with Garde Republicaine, suffered a torn ligament and will be out of action for two months.

Owino will be sidelined for two months after he suffered a right calf sprain. Despite missing the three key players, Gor coach Charles Akonnor is looking forward to an impressive performance from his side, buoyed by depth in the squad.

At Akonnor’s disposal are new signings, striker Paul Okoth who has already scored two goals in the tournament, defender Daniel Sakari, midfielder Enoch Machaka, Ghanaian Ebenezer Ocran and Hansel Ochieng.

On their way to the semi-finals, Al Hilal, who are chasing a maiden title, defeated Kenya’s Tusker FC 2-0 and Zanzibar’s Kikosi Cha Valantia Zanzibar 4-0.

Despite losing 1-0 to Rayon Sports in their final pool match, Al Hilal advanced to the semi-finals as they finished as best runners-up, thanks to a superior goal difference.

The tournament will conclude on Friday with the final and third place play-off matches at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

The tournament’s winner will pocket $30,000 (Sh3.8 million). The teams that finish second and third will receive $20,000 (Sh2.5 million) and $10,000 (Sh1.2 million) respectively.
